This condominium sits between the Ocean Park neighborhood of Santa Monica and the Rose Avenue section of Venice, two areas that have recently seen a surge in development, thanks in part to the booming tech district anchored by Google’s Southern California offices, less than five minutes away by car.

Ocean View Park, which has a lawn and beachside tennis courts, is about a mile away, as is the beach. A stretch of Lincoln Boulevard with a Whole Foods grocery store and a CVS is about a 10-minute walk; Culver City and Los Angeles International Airport are about a 20-minute drive.

Size: 1,906 square feet

Price per square foot: $1,204

Indoors: A gate separates this complex from the sidewalk, with this unit’s door off the main walkway.

The living room has wide-plank oak floors and floor-to-ceiling windows that open to a patio. The living and dining areas are separated by a kitchen with Miele appliances, custom-built walnut cabinets and a walk-in pantry. A laundry room and a half bathroom are across from the kitchen. And at the far end of the living area, near glass doors that open to a patio, is space for a dining table.

From the living room, a short set of steps leads to the bedrooms on this level: One is big enough to hold a queen-size bed; across the hall is a smaller room that could hold a full-size bed or serve as an office. A full bathroom with a combination tub and shower and a sleek quartz-topped vanity is nearby.

A second set of steps leads from the living room to the primary suite, on the second level. The bedroom has a private balcony; the bathroom has a walk-in closet with built-in shelving, a vanity with two sinks, and a deep soaking tub next to a walk-in shower with a window.

Outdoor space: The patio on the main level is directly off the dining area, making it easy to hold indoor-outdoor events in the space. There is also a roof deck with views of Santa Monica’s low-rise residential buildings. The unit comes with two underground parking spaces.

Taxes: $28,692 (estimated), plus a $600 monthly homeowner association fee

Built in 1896 for Albert H. Beach, a local businessman, this house was bought in the late 1990s by Harry G. Parashis, an art gallery owner who restored a number of historic homes in California. Mr. Parashis worked with the wallpaper company Bradbury & Bradbury to add period-appropriate wallcoverings to many of the rooms in this house.

Escondido, one of the oldest cities in San Diego County, has a population of more than 150,000. This house is about five minutes from Grand Avenue, a major thoroughfare lined with restaurants, pubs and coffee shops. Downtown San Diego is a 30- to 40-minute drive, depending on traffic.

Size: 3,300 square feet

Price per square foot: $682

Indoors: From the street, a tall wrought-iron gate flanked by two stone lions opens to a path leading to the front porch, set in a facade trimmed with ornately carved fish-scale siding, a common feature of Queen Anne architecture.

Behind the front door is a foyer wallpapered in red and blue, with a grand staircase leading to the second level. To the right is a parlor with a fireplace that has a Minton-tile surround; light fixtures salvaged from estates of the same era; and a ceiling covered in wallpaper inspired by the work of the textile designer William Morris.

Off the main hallway, just behind the parlor, is a dining room with more patterned wallpaper and original hardwood floors. Beyond is the kitchen, which has green-and-cream-painted cabinets, a stainless-steel dishwasher and a white porcelain farmhouse-style sink.

There are two other rooms on this side of the house: an informal family room, big enough to hold a sofa and a television; and a sunroom that opens to one of several porches. Also on the first floor, off the main hallway, is a powder room with a pedestal sink.

The bedroom at the top of the stairs has floral carpeting and a slightly rounded shape; next door is a glamorous bathroom with pink wallpaper and an ornate soaking tub.

A second bedroom, farther down the hall, has a closet hidden behind mahogany doors. There are also two more bedrooms, large enough to hold queen-size beds; they share a hallway bathroom with a claw-foot tub.

Outdoor space: The covered porch off the sunroom has a colorful tile floor and blue-painted columns; it has a view of the backyard, landscaped with low hedges and manicured flower beds, some surrounding a stone fountain. Around the corner, a patio sheltered by a trellis is an ideal size for a dining table. There is also a gazebo built to resemble a miniature version of the main house. The detached garage holds two cars, and there is room to park a few more in the driveway.

Taxes: $21,128 (estimated, although the home is eligible for reduced property taxes under the Mills Act, which offers homeowners an economic incentive to preserve historic properties)

This house is in a neighborhood on the edge of Las Trampas Regional Wilderness Park, where hiking and riding trails wind through an expanse of nearly 6,000 acres. On this side of the park, about a 10-minute drive from the house, is the Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site, a Spanish Colonial house that was occupied by the playwright in the 1930s and 1940s.

The center of town, about five minutes away, has a library and a well-ranked public high school. Oakland is about a half-hour drive; San Francisco and San Jose are 45 minutes away.

Size: 2,941 square feet

Price per square foot: $782

Indoors: A long driveway leads from the street to the entrance, where the front door opens into a long foyer with hardwood floors.

At the end of the foyer is the main living area, which has a large A-frame-style window that looks out onto the surrounding trees. Built into one wall are wood bookshelves and a fireplace with a simple black tile surround.

Behind the living room is an open dining area and a kitchen with granite counters. On the other side of the kitchen is another dining area, in front of glass doors that open to the back patio.

From the foyer, a hallway extends toward the right side of the house, where there are three bedrooms. At the far end of the hall is the primary suite, which has a large walk-in closet and a bathroom with access to outdoor stairs leading to the swimming pool. Two more bedrooms, roughly equal in size, are also off the main hallway; one has wood-paneled walls and is currently used as a home office. They share a bathroom with a combination tub and shower.

A staircase in the foyer leads to the lower level, where there is a spacious den with sliding-glass doors that open to the pool area, as well as another bedroom and a full bathroom.

Outdoor space: A long wood deck stretches across the living area, offering views of the neighborhood. The pool is surrounded by concrete, with ample space for barbecuing and dining. At the front of the house is an attached garage that holds two cars.

Taxes: $28,740 (estimated), plus an $86 monthly homeowner association fee
