Find Plano apartment complex ratings with this map

If you’re renting an apartment in Plano or looking for one, the city has a formal process to rate complexes and enforce basic building and living standards.

The Rental Registration and Inspection Program is intended to maintain “the most desirable multi-family properties in the nation,” according to the program’s website. It includes a process to enforce minimum building standards and property maintenance, and apartment owners can receive notices or fines for violations.

A city ordinance requires any multi-family dwelling that is five or more years old to register with the property standards director. It allows for some exemptions based on the building’s age and whether or not a recent valid complaint has been received.

The map below, available on the city’s website, shows inspection ratings from “A” through “F” for the exterior and interior of apartment complexes. It also lists the date the property was inspected and when it expires, as well as the number of units and when it was built. Some have additional information, such as a website or email address for the complex.

Some Plano residents have pushed back against the construction of more apartments in the city of 285,000, citing their preference to keep the city less dense and more suburban.

The issue was a main contention in the fight against Plano Tomorrow, the city’s former long-range planning guidelines. It was abandoned after a five-year legal battle with a group of residents who said there was not enough community involvement. They maintained that the former plan encouraged dense development that would alter the suburban character of Plano.

A new long-range planning document, the 2021 Comprehensive Plan, was recently approved by the city council. The plan, which helped address residents’ concerns, will serve as a guideline for growth and redevelopment for decades to come.

Plano leaders have said the new plan is not perfect, but will allow the city to move forward with its long-range planning.
