H-E-B buys a vacant supermarket in southern Dallas

H-E-B has purchased a building on West Wheatland Road in southern Dallas and near neighborhoods in Duncanville and DeSoto.

The 58,940-square-foot supermarket at 4101 W. Wheatland Road was built for Albertsons and opened in 1985. It operated as an Albertsons until 2004 and has been vacant for years.

The company didn’t disclose specific plans for the property.

“We recently purchased property in the southern sector of Dallas County in anticipation of future growth. No construction date has been set,” said Mabrie Jackson, senior director of public affairs for H-E-B/Central Market, in an emailed response.

She added the company takes a “long-term view of our growth, and we have a portfolio of landholdings.”

The San Antonio-based grocer is putting its first D-FW stores in suburban Collin County. H-E-B has announced openings later this year in Plano and Frisco and early next year in McKinney. Over the past 20 years, H-E-B has been buying property throughout D-FW.

It also has more than one store concept. H-E-B, which already operates six Central Market stores in D-FW, has said its expansion plans will include two more chains it operates, Mi Tienda and Joe V’s Smart Shop, a low-cost concept.

“We look forward to serving more Texans with our multi-format store offerings,” Jackson said.

H-E-B’s purchase on West Wheatland Road includes about 5.4 acres of land, and the property is an area that has WinCo Foods, Aldi, Tom Thumb and Walmart Supercenter stores within a 5-mile radius.

Some Dallas City Council members have been publicly critical of grocers in general about the lack of supermarkets in southern Dallas. Over the years, it’s been a constant topic at city hall.
