Some of Prosper’s signature silos are coming down for future development

The tallest structures in downtown Prosper aren’t office buildings, hotel towers or high-rise residential.

They are the cluster of old grain silos along the railroad tracks at Broadway Street that for decades have defined Prosper’s skyline.

Once used to stockpile grain for nearby egg and poultry farms, the huge storage bins are a relic from the Collin County town’s agricultural past.

“The iconic silos were an integral part of the bustling farming economy of the early days, providing a way for the grain and corn farmers of the area to store their crops,” according to a news release from the town of Prosper. “Because they were built in close proximity to the railroad tracks, the silos also served as a launching point for the sale and distribution of the crops grown in rich land to all points north and south.

“While the silos have sat empty for many years, their presence gave residents and visitors a sense of the Town’s roots, a set of identifying symbols unmatched by any other.”

Now four of the eight silos are being demolished by new owners of the property. Some old metal barns are going, too.

“The three smaller silos on the southernmost edge of the grouping will remain in place, as well as the larger one on the east side of the tracks,” the city said in an announcement. “The town of Prosper is hoping to purchase or otherwise obtain the three silos which will remain and make them a permanent part of the downtown revitalization effort.

“The larger silo on the east side of the tracks is privately owned and there are currently no plans to remove it.”

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ real estate companies purchased the soon-to-be-demolished silos late last year from the Mahard Feed Mill Inc., county records show. The site sits at the end of Prosper’s historic downtown retail center.

“The company plans to build a mixed-use development on that land sometime in the future,” the city said in a statement.

Jones’ Blue Star Land and related companies own almost 500 acres between downtown Prosper and Dallas Parkway, county tax records show. Blue Star Land and the Jones family are already one of the largest landowners and developers in Prosper.

The Cowboys owner and developer Lincoln Property built the huge Gates of Prosper shopping centers on both sides of Preston Road on the north side of U.S. Highway 380.

Blue Star Land also recently acquired a Prosper business park site from Prosper’s Mahard family.
