Why millionaires are flocking to Wimberley in Hays County, Texas

A shooting range, a lazy river with a lagoon, and a seven-car luxury showroom are just a few of the opulent amenities you’ll find at Hays County’s most expensive residential listing — a $9.89 million “gentleman’s ranch” sitting on a sprawling 22 acres in the small town of Wimberley.

But if lagoons and showrooms aren’t your thing, the small Hill Country town about an hour from both San Antonio and Austin has at least 32 other million-dollar-plus luxury listings within its tony 16-square-mile city limits.

BLAST ZONE: As quarries expand in the Hill Country, landscapes and homeowners pay the price

Wimberley has become a sort of millionaire’s playground in Central Texas over the past decade, having grown in popularity with wealthy homeowners seeking a respite from the big city lights of Austin, San Antonio, Houston and Dallas.

Hays County’s priciest listing is this $9.8 million “gentleman’s ranch” in Wimberley, Texas, which is about an hour from both San Antonio and Austin.

Eric Copper, a luxury real estate agent with Austin Portfolio Real Estate/Keller Williams Realty, is the listing agent for the $9.89 million Wimberley mansion. Copper said the small town has become popular with the economic elite because it’s fairly close to big cities while still remaining secluded in charming Hill Country.

“It’s prime Hill Country terrain, in the heart of the Hill Country where the Cypress Creek meets the Blanco River,” Copper said. “You’ve got beautiful, towering cypress trees and wildflowers. It’s all very outdoorsy and artsy and it’s got this small-town, eclectic charm, paired with absolutely gorgeous topography and landscaping.”

Copper said several people who live in the million-dollar estates in Wimberley have the properties as second homes and vacation there in their spare time.

“The San Marcos airport, which is a private airport, is close by, and a lot of these folks who do have money can get in and out really easily,” Copper said. “The Austin airport is not far at all. You can enjoy small-town life there in a really beautiful natural setting, with close proximity to one of the most popular cities in Texas, which is Austin.”

Copper describes the $9.8 million mansion, the most expensive residential listing in Hays County, as a “gentleman’s ranch,” complete with six bedrooms, eight bathrooms and just over 9,000 square feet. It sits on 22 acres of pristine Blanco River land and is just about a mile-and-a-half from quirky downtown Wimberley.

The property also comes with a 2,000-square-foot, three-bedroom guest house; a dedicated “hobby room” with a media and gaming area; multiple decks, patios and outdoor entertainment space; a fully equipped gym; a 1,000-bottle, walk-in wine cooler; a resort-style pool with a waterslide; an entire children’s playground; and a handgun range with three built-in gun safes.

“To have this amount of acreage in Wimberley is pretty special, this close to downtown. You feel like you’re in the country and you feel like you’re close to downtown,” Copper said. “The amount of acreage makes it super special, and then you also have the size of the house and all the amenities that this property has.”

Wimberley’s charm and allure has become a magnet for not just millionaires, but all kinds of people who want to have a unique Hill Country experience. The city is known for its quaint bed and breakfasts, its zipline excursions through the canyons, its breweries and wineries, and its spectacular views.
